Opening prayer

Dear Lord as we enter into your presence through a new door, we thank you for bringing us together to worship you.
We thank you for the Christian generosity of the people of Elm Ridge in offering their hall to us to worship you in our own way.
Help us to show our gratefulness in our words and actions when we meet together for coffee after our services.
We thank you that we have been able to keep in contact during the last 20 months through social media, typed services and personal visits and we thank you for all the people involved in making that happen.
We thank you for the successful Christmas Fair last Saturday and the fund raising campaign which is going so well.
Finally Lord we thank you for guiding us through this difficult period in our church life and ask that you will continue to be with us as we seek to do your will.
Lord God most merciful,
we confess that we have sinned,
through our own fault and in common with others,
in thought word and deed,
and through what we have left undone.
We ask to be forgiven
By the power of your Spirit turn us from evil to good
Help us to forgive others
And keep us in your ways of righteousness and love
Through Jesus Christ our Lord who taught us when we pray to say:
Our Father Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
for thine is the Kingdom the Power and the Glory
For ever Amen

Readings

Acts 4: 23 - 31

The Believers Pray for Boldness
23 As soon as Peter and John were set free, they returned to their group and told them what the chief priests and the elders had said. 24 When the believers heard it, they all joined together in prayer to God: "Master and Creator of heaven, earth, and sea, and all that is in them! 25 By means of the Holy Spirit you spoke through our ancestor David, your servant, when he said,
'Why were the Gentiles furious;
why did people make their useless plots?
26 The kings of the earth prepared themselves,
and the rulers met together against the Lord and his Messiah.'
27 For indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together in this city with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Jesus, your holy Servant, whom you made Messiah. 28 They gathered to do everything that you by your power and will had already decided would happen. 29 And now, Lord, take notice of the threats they have made, and allow us, your servants, to speak your message with all boldness. 30 Reach out your hand to heal, and grant that wonders and miracles may be performed through the name of your holy Servant Jesus."
31 When they finished praying, the place where they were meeting was shaken. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim God's message with boldness.

Matthew 18: 20

20 For where two or three come together in my name,
I am there with them."

Hymn 583: The Church is wherever God's people are praising

tune: The Bard of Armagh, with full verse intro.

1. The Church is wherever God's people are praising,
Singing their thanks for his goodness this day
The Church is wherever disciples of Jesus
Remember his story and walk in his way.

2. The church is wherever God's people are helping,
caring for neighbours in sickness and need.
The church is wherever God's people are sharing
the words of the Bible in gift and in deed.

Reflection

So here we are at last - gathered together to worship God.

It's been a long 20 months, hasn't it? And it's not over yet I'm afraid.

So how did you worship during the closure?

It's amazing how quickly you can get into a new routine isn't it? and how quickly you can forget the old!

For me my new Sunday morning routine started at eight o'clock when I listened to the morning service on Radio Tees. This is a national Christian service presented on all the local BBC stations in the country. It has been fascinating listening to the different types of worship from the various denominations or Christian groups.

This was followed by the highlight of the day, which was Zoe's Hymn Singing at 10:45. It was such a simple suggestion by Zoe to Harry Marshall and me - 'Would you mind if I played and sang some hymns at 10:45 every Sunday on Facebook?'

Of course we said "yes" and Harry M arranged to put it on YouTube as well. We also shared it with two national URC Facebook accounts and at its peak it had 500 viewers.

Not everybody watched it live, but those of us who did became a little worshipping community posting (writing) comments as we joined in the singing. And that community was not just from Northgate, but from all over the country and even Australia, where David Robinson joined us at midnight when he came off his shift as a paramedic.

I followed this by reading the service provided by the various Ministers/Worship Leaders and finally I watched Songs of Praise on the TV, which often touches me, but not always!

So how did you worship- did you create your own new routine? I know of one couple who do not have the internet but who have a printed version the service delivered to them every week and they read it out loud to each other.

And I am sure there are other members, like them, who gain benefit from the printed version of the service.

These last 20 months have been hard for us as a church but I believe that God has been there besides us all the time, even when we didn't realise it.

I believe that Zoe was literally a 'God Send' in lifting our spirits every week.

We have become more technologically savvy with a new website, Zoom bible study and meetings and videoed special services - like the excellent Remembrance Service last week.

For those without computers the distribution of the printed services and the magazine, together with phone calls and visits, have kept people in touch with the church.

People have maintained their giving to the church and many have switched from envelopes/cash on the plate to direct payments into the bank.

Even the problems with the building have an upside as it's made us realise how much we value it.

Elm Ridge Methodist Church saw the article in the Echo about our being unable to worship together and offered us the use of their hall for Sunday Worship and joint fellowship afterwards. God's guidance again

As well as raising money, our fundraising-campaign has lifted our profile in the town. As a result various contacts have been made and we can see that we are being guided to becoming a more community orientated church.

We sometimes don't appreciate what a gem of a building we have, but other people can see it. Everyone that we have shown the building to, from councillors, council officials and charity workers, have had a similar reaction, which is that they want to work with us to get the most benefit from of our building.

An example of this is Sajna Ali, the local councillor for the Northgate Ward.

This is part of what she wrote:

"We have all recognised during this pandemic the importance of reaching out to our community residents who have no socialising meeting place in Northgate and therefore can be left feeling isolated. We need to engage through offering socialising through cake and coffee mornings to learning or improving mental health and well-being through group activities."

Letting us use the lovely facilities that the church has to offer will help us to reach out to young and old from having fun arts and crafts and Adults and Children's reading groups to also fun nutritional food and wellbeing activities.

We recognise that the church is a very important historic building used as a peaceful place of worship. To be able to utilise the space to benefit our residents would further help build bridges to connect people together, especially those who are alone or digitally excluded.'

As I say, other people can also see the potential of the building and want to work with us, which will allow us to witness to our faith by our example.

Because we must remember that 'The church is not the building, it is the people.'

YOU are the Church.

We have just sung about that and let me remind you of the words.

Hymn 583, Verse 1:

The Church is wherever God's people are praising,
Singing their thanks for his goodness this day
The Church is wherever disciples of Jesus
Remember his story and walk in his way.

Wherever we are praising - be it Songs of Praise, Zoe's singing, in church, in a garden, or in a hall like we are now - wherever we are praising God - there is the church.
Wherever we walk in his way. We should be a living witness to the teachings of Jesus by the way we live our lives. Sobering thought, isn't it?
Do people look at the way you live your life and see that you are a follower of Jesus?
When we meet with the community to share our building will they feel that we have something that they haven't got and want to know more?

Verse 2:

The church is wherever God's people are helping,
caring for neighbours in sickness and need.
The church is wherever God's people are sharing
the words of the Bible in gift and in deed.

Wherever we help people in sickness and in need we are being Church in the world.
Whenever we share God's word with people either verbally or by the way we conduct ourselves we are being Church.

Prayers of Intercession

It is my practice when praying the prayers of intercession to pause at the end of each petition for you to add your own prayers and I invite you to do the same now
Let us Pray:
Dear Lord we come before you now with our prayers for the world and ourselves.
Be with us as we worship you in our new surroundings and bless those of our number who, for whatever reason, have not been able to join us today.
In particular we pray for...............
Help us to discern your will for the building at Northgate and guide us to the sources of funds to repair it.
In particular we pray for...............
Be with this country as we fight the Corona Virus and give the people in charge wisdom and courage to take the right decisions and may the general public act sensibly for the good of all.
In particular we pray for...............
Be with the staff of the NHS as they continue to treat their patients and show loving kindness even though they are stressed and tired from a long hard 20 months.
In particular we pray for...............
Be with the staff and residents of Care Homes as they cope with shortage of staff and uncertainty as to what the future holds
In particular we pray for...............
Be with everyone involved in the vaccination programme which is bringing so much hope to us all and guide them to make the right decisions, not just for this country, but for the benefit of all mankind.
In particular we pray for...............
Lord this virus has affected many other countries throughout the world and we pray that the world leaders are given wisdom and in particular that the rich countries will help the poorer countries to overcome it.
In particular we pray for...............
Be with the sick in hospital and at home. Surround them with your peace and love and show us how we can help them.
In particular we pray for...............
Be with the bereaved, especially those who were not able to say their farewells properly and show us how we can help them
In particular we pray for...............
Be with those who are Isolating or are housebound and show us how we can help them
In particular we pray for...............
Be with those who have monetary worries especially those who have lost their jobs or who are finding it difficult to cope with a reduced income and show us how we can help them.
In particular we pray for...............
Guide us, your people, as we face an uncertain future in all sorts of ways and show us how we can best serve you in the future
In particular I pray for .........
Finally Lord we pray for ourselves and bring before you our own concerns..............
Lord in your mercy hear our prayers
Amen

Introduction to Hymn

We are going to close with a hymn about being the people of God and as you sing it I would like you to look out for these words
'You're going to work out my plan' -
We need to go forward, believing that God has a plan for each one of us individually and as the Church.
'Don't get too set in your ways'
Well we've certainly been shaken out of our cosy existence haven't we?
'Each step is only a phase'
If you look back at the life of the church - and some of us can look further back than others-
You can see the various phases of our life together as a church.
'No matter what you may do'
'I shall be faithful and true'
We can go forward in the sure knowledge that God is guiding us and wants the best for his church - you and me- because we are his people 'the people of God'

Hymn 547: 'Moses, I know you're the man

tune: The people of God, with intro.

1. 'Moses, I know you're the man,'
The Lord said.
'You're going to work out my plan,'
The Lord said.
'Lead all the Israelites out of slavery,
And I shall make them a wandering race
called the people of God.'

Chorus:
So every day
We're on our way,
For we're a travelling, wandering race,
We're the people of God.

2. 'Don't get too set in your ways,'
The Lord said,
'Each step is only a phase,'
The Lord said,
'I'll go before you and I shall be a sign
To guide my travelling, wandering race,
You're the people of God.'

Chorus

3. 'No matter what you may do,'
The Lord said,
'I shall be faithful and true,'
The Lord said,
'My love will strengthen you as you go along,
For you're my travelling, wandering race,
You're the people of God.'

Chorus

4. 'Look at the birds in the air,'
The Lord said,
'They fly unhampered by care,'
The Lord said,
'You will move easier if you're travelling light,
For you're a wandering, vagabond race,
You're the people of God.'

Chorus

5. 'Foxes have places to go'
The Lord said,
'But I've no home here below,'
The Lord said,
'So if you want to be with me all your days,
Keep up the moving and travelling on,
You're the people of God.'

Chorus

Estelle White (1925 - 2011)

The URC denominational church audio Services (podcasts) at https://devotions.urc.org.uk/ are excellent, with well-delivered prayers and readings using a selection of voices and well-presented hymns.

Do give these a try - they are excellent.

(Just start the sound playing and scroll down to the written words)

Why not put the time aside for Zoe at 10:45, our preacher's service after that and follow up with the podcast - you will feel as if you had been IN church, as well as WITH church.
